UTR number: what it is and how to get it

At Wecasa, we want to ensure your cleaning business is set up for success and fully compliant with UK law. As of 2026, new UK government rules (Platform Reporting) require all digital platforms to verify the tax status of the professionals they partner with.

To start working with Wecasa, you will need to provide your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) in the documents section.

What is a UTR Number?

Your UTR is a 10-digit number issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). It identifies you as a registered self-employed professional in the UK tax system.

I don't have a UTR. How do I apply?

1. Create your GOV.UK One Login

The UK government now uses a single secure account for everything. To get started, create or sign in to your GOV.UK One Login.

  • You will need an email address and a photo ID (like a Passport or Driving Licence).

  • You may be asked to download the GOV.UK ID Check app on your smartphone to scan your face and ID to prove who you are.

2. Register for Self Assessment

Once you have your One Login, you need to tell HMRC you are working for yourself. Register for Self Assessment on GOV.UK by following the on-screen instructions.

  • Information you will need: Your National Insurance Number, your current home address, and your business start date (the date you joined Wecasa).

Applying is free and done entirely online.

3. Get your UTR

HMRC will process your application and send your 10-digit UTR number by post, which usually takes 10–15 working days.

However, you can often see it much sooner in the app. As soon as your application is processed (usually within a few days), your UTR will appear digitally in the HMRC App. This is the quickest way to get back to work without waiting for the mail!

Summary:

  • Download the HMRC App: For the fastest results, download the HMRC app (iOS or Android) to see your UTR as soon as it is generated.

  • Check Your Mail: Keep an eye out for your official HMRC welcome letter containing your 10-digit UTR (this usually arrives within 10–15 working days).

  • Update Your Profile: Enter your 10-digit UTR into your Wecasa Pro app to get your account activated. And send us a screenshot or document where your name & UTR number appears.

FAQ:

I earn less than Β£1,000 per year. Do I still need a UTR?

Yes. While the UK Government has a "Trading Allowance" for income under Β£1,000, Wecasa requires all partners to have a UTR. This ensures you are fully compliant with the 2026 Platform Reporting rules and prevents your account from being paused once you cross the earning threshold.

How long does it take to get my UTR?

Typically, it takes 10–15 working days for the physical letter to arrive. However, you can often find it in 2–5 days by logging into the HMRC App once your application has been processed.

Can I start working before I have my UTR?

No. Under the current 2026 regulations, Wecasa must verify your tax status before you can accept cleaning sessions. We recommend applying immediately so you can get back to work as quickly as possible.

What if I already have a UTR from a previous job or side hustle?

You don't need a new one! Your UTR is yours for life. Simply find it on an old tax return or via the HMRC app and upload it to your Wecasa profile.

I’ve lost my UTR number. What should I do?

If you can't find it in the HMRC app or on old letters, you can request it through the HMRC Self Assessment helpline (0300 200 3310). They will verify your identity and send a copy of your UTR to you by post.

Does having a UTR mean I have to pay tax immediately?

Not necessarily. A UTR simply identifies you to HMRC. You only pay tax if your total annual profit exceeds the personal tax-free allowance. Having a UTR now just ensures your business is "set up" correctly.

When and where do I declare my taxes?

The UK tax year always runs from 6 April to 5 April. You declare your income after the tax year ends.

  • Where: You file your tax return online via the HMRC Self Assessment portal or through the HMRC App.

  • The Deadline: You must file your return and pay any tax owed by 31 January following the end of the tax year.

  • Quarterly Updates: If your gross annual income exceeds Β£50,000, you may be required to send digital updates every three months under Making Tax Digital rules.
