VAT: Updating your Pro Account

Your VAT status depends on your total global turnover. If you exceed the government's threshold, you must register for VAT. It is mandatory to keep this information updated in your Pro App to ensure your invoices are legally compliant.

1. Am I liable for VAT?

In the UK, your liability for VAT depends on your total business turnover (gross sales) over a rolling 12-month period. It is not based on the calendar year alone.

The Thresholds for 2026:

  • Below £90,000: You are generally "VAT exempt" or under the threshold—you do not charge VAT to your customers.

  • Approaching £90,000: You must monitor your total turnover every month. If your total sales for the previous 12 months hit £90,000, you must register.

  • Exceeding the threshold: You must register with HMRC within 30 days of realizing you have crossed the limit.

Important: To calculate your threshold, you must look at your total global turnover. This includes your Wecasa earnings plus income from direct private clients and any other platforms you use.

2. What should I do if I exceed these amounts?

As soon as you realize you will cross the £90,000 threshold, you must take action:

  • Register with HMRC: Apply for a VAT Registration Number via your HMRC Government Gateway account.

  • Waiting for your number: It usually takes 2–4 weeks to receive your number. During this time, you cannot show VAT on your invoices, but you should adjust your prices to account for the tax you will eventually owe HMRC.

  • Update your Wecasa Pro App: It is vital that you provide us with your 9-digit VAT number (starting with GB) as soon as it arrives so we can ensure your customer invoices are legally valid.

3. How to update my status in the App?

Updating your status takes only a few seconds in the Wecasa Pro app:

  1. Open your Wecasa Pro app.

  2. Go to the "My account" tab.

  3. Click on "Personal Information".

  4. Check the box "My services are subject to VAT".

  5. Enter your 9-digit VAT number (e.g., GB 123 4567 89) and click "Save".

💡 Note: If you have applied for a number but haven't received it yet, please contact our Pro Support team to inform us of your "Effective Date of Registration."

Where can I find my total turnover?

You can track your earnings history through your Wecasa weekly summaries.

However, for your total business turnover (including outside clients), you should check your own bookkeeping records or your business bank account statements.
